Trapped by Ukraine rebel assault, civilians stay under dead town

DEBALTSEVE, Ukraine (Reuters) - A rat was racing in the corner of the cellar below the ruins of a bombed-out five storey apartment building. In the darkness, an old woman was making soup and baking bread on a homemade wood-burning stove.

It had been safe to leave for several days, but Nina Shono, 80, one of eight people who sheltered in this basement through weeks of intense bombardment, chose to stay. She tried to describe her fear.
