QuickCheck: Did a man open fire during a robbery attempt in Johor?

"When was the last time you had a desk pop?"

This line from the now iconic scene in the movie The Other Guys is when Detective Allen Gamble (played by Will Ferrell) was pranked into firing his pistol while sitting at his desk at work.

Like Allen, sometimes when things aren't going your way at work, you just have to release some steam and have a desk pop.

All jokes aside, did a robber shoot his gun during a failed robbery attempt before fleeing the scene?

VERDICT:

TRUE

Police are investigating a robbery attempt in Seri Alam where a man is believed to have fired a shot before fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.

Seri Alam OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the incident, which has been making rounds on social media, occurred outside a shop in Taman Megah Ria at about 7.10pm on Saturday (July 19).

“The man entered the shop and pointed an object believed to be a pistol at the victim while demanding cash.

“The suspect then fired a shot outside the shop before escaping on a motorcycle.

“However, no injuries were reported,” he said in a statement on Sunday (July 20).

ACP Sohaimi said the case was being investigated under Section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 for discharging a firearm during an attempted robbery, which provides imprisonment of not less than 30 years and not more than 40 years, as well as not less than 12 strokes of the cane.

He urged anyone with information about the incident to contact the nearest police station or the Seri Alam police headquarters at 07-387 1422 or hotline 07-386 4222.

In the 31-second video that went viral, the man is seen falling before getting up and fleeing the scene on a motorcycle while holding an object that looked like a gun.
