QuickCheck: Did floodwaters sweep away a bridge in Johor?

WITH social media being as present in our lives as it is, we are often bombarded with seemingly-convincing videos – often viral ones – claiming to carry shocking news. One such video went viral recently, along with the claim that a bridge in Sikamat, Johor has collapsed due to the current spell of bad weather.

Is this claim true?

VERDICT:

FALSE

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat has denied a claim made in a viral TikTok video that a bridge in the state has recently collapsed.

He said in a statement that police detected the 20-second viral video uploaded on Tik Tok by a user, “naturelikeit” on Dec 12 last year.

“The video showed a bridge collapsing and being swept by strong river currents. We confirmed that the incident did not happen in Johor but in a foreign country,” said Comm Kamarul Zaman.

“We advise the public not to spread fake news or messages that can cause fear and unrest to the public,” he added.

Comm Kamarul Zaman added that police can take action against any individuals that were found to spread fake news.
