QuickCheck: Is it true your passport application’s status can be checked online?

NOW that the Immigration Department is encouraging the public to apply and pay for their passports online, those applying for new travel documents have to wait for an email from the department informing them once it is ready to be picked up. Sometimes applicants might miss the email as it got stuck in their spam filter or for whatever reason they lost access to their account.

As the Immigration Department will only hold on to your ready passport for 90 days, can you check your passport application status online?

Verdict:

TRUE

A surprising number of people are unaware that you can check for your passport application status online.

In fact, the tool is even listed on the same page as the one you would have used to apply for a new passport.

Simply go to the page https://imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/eservices/main and look for the link called "Inquiry of the application status" and click on it. It will be under the MyOnline Passport column on the landing page.

From there, you will be asked for which age category you fall under (above or below 18) and then you will be asked to provide your old passport and your current MyKad number.

Applicants under 18 will have to give the passport and MyKad number of your parent or guardian.

The system will then tell you if your passport is ready, still being processed or if there are any additional requirements that the Immigration Department needs you to sort out before they can expedite your application.

The usual problems you might face would be issues with the photo you provided when you started your application, though the Immigration Department may ask you for additional supporting documents.

If your passport is ready to be picked up, you will be given a link to book an appointment with the Immigration Department.

If you don't have an appointment you might be turned away when you go to pick up your passport so make sure you get that sorted first.
