QuickCheck: Is an upcoming concert in Sabah featuring a Malaysian rock star actually a scam?

LAST week, it was claimed that an upcoming concert featuring Datuk Awie, aka Ahmad Azhar Othman, would take place in Kota Kinabalu on Feb 4 next year. Is this actually a scam?

VERDICT:

TRUE

There is no such concert, and claims that there is one are actually a scam.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Farouk Eshak said police received a complaint from a 53-year-old artist on Oct 25 over the online post listing him as one of the performers in the Feb 4 "concert".

Police have confirmed that the complainant was Malaysian rock legend Datuk Awie, aka Ahmad Azhar Othman.

"He denied being offered a contract to join the concert," he said, adding that tickets were being sold at prices from RM199 to RM649 and that the claim was that the “concert” was to be held in Kota Kinabalu.

A 48-year-old woman was arrested the day after the complaint was lodged, following investigations.

"She has two offences on her criminal record, including one for cheating. She has been remanded until Saturday (Oct 29).

"We urge everyone who bought tickets to come forward and file reports to assist us," ACP Mohamad Farouk said in a statement on Friday (Oct 28).
