QuickCheck: Was a citizen’s arrest made in front of a Shah Alam hypermarket?

A VIDEO has been making its rounds on social media showing a man being caught by a group of people in front of a Mydin hypermarket in Shah Alam allegedly for theft.

Was a man detained by members of the public for theft?

Verdict:

YES

Shah Alam OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said in a press release on Tuesday (Sept 13) that the man had been detained by members of the public for allegedly stealing two necklaces worth RM1,500.

The 34-year-old suspect, who works as a car accessory

salesman, was detained by the public in front of the Mydin hypermarket in Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam after he stole the necklaces from a jewellery shop nearby.

"The police were informed of the incident after a salesperson from the jewellery shop contacted the operations room of IPD Shah Alam after the suspect was caught," said ACP Mohd Iqbal.

"The suspect has been remanded for three days, starting on Sept 14 until Sept 16, to aid with the investigation," he said, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code.

ACP Mohd Iqbal urged the public to call the assistant investigating officer, Sjn Shamsul Azeerin at 012-980 2652 if they have any information regarding the case.
