QuickCheck: Were elephants spotted roaming the streets of Kluang?

A VIDEO has been circulating online of elephants roaming the streets of a housing area purportedly in Taman Seri Impian in Kluang, Johor.

Is this video true?

Verdict:

TRUE

Earlier this week, photos and a one-minute video went viral on social media showing the presence of elephants believed to be looking for food in Taman Seri Impian.

According to the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), a herd of 10 wild elephants was spotted roaming around in the housing area.

Perhilitan Johor director Aminuddin Jamin said they had however taken immediate action to guide the herd back to its proper habitat.

"We took control measures because the herd of elephants was large and when the investigation was carried out, we found that next to the residential area there was a field in the early stages of replanting.

"The old trees were in the process of chipping which could have lured the elephants," he said when contacted by Bernama on Tuesday (Aug 9).

According to Aminuddin the herd could pose a danger to the public as the animals often appeared at the site of the area's night market.

He said the elephants would come to feed off the leftover food and fruits the traders had thrown away before returning to the forest around Gunung Lambak.
