EARLIER this week, it was said that the police arrested a man who allegedly put an ecigarette into a baby's mouth. Did this really happen as claimed?

Verdict:

TRUE

Johor Baru North OCPD Asst Comm Rupiah Abd Wahid said a 23-year-old businessman was detained at the Criminal Investigation Department of the district police headquarters at 12.45am on Monday (Aug 8).

She said the arrest was made after her team received a police report lodged by the seven-month-old baby girl's mother on Aug 6. The mother claimed the man was her sister's friend.

"According to the complainant, at the time of the incident, she and the baby were with her sister and the man at a restaurant.

"All of a sudden, the man who was carrying the baby, had jokingly placed the non-functioning ecigarette into the baby's mouth and this was recorded by the mother’s sister who posted it on social media and it went viral.

She said following the report, the police opened an investigation paper.

The man has since been remanded for five days to assist with an investigation under Section 31(1) (a) of the Child Act 2001 following an order issued on Tuesday (Aug 9) by Magistrate R. Salini.
