QuickCheck: Is the Great Wall of China the only man-made structure visible from space?

EMPEROR Shi Huang Ti's Great Wall is so spectacularly large that it is the only man-made structure that can be seen from space.

Is this true?

Verdict:

FALSE

If you have a good enough camera or telescope, anything built on the surface of Earth can be viewed from space.

However, if you were to say what structures are visible with the naked eye, then things change somewhat.

None of the Apollo astronauts reported seeing any specific human structures during their missions to the Moon.

The astronauts, cosmonauts and taikonauts who have orbited our planet only ever reported seeing the lights of our cities when they were on Earth's night side.

Another misconception about the Great Wall of China is that it is a single wall encapsulating the Far East nation.

It's actually a series of different fortifications built at different times. Some parts of the "wall" connect, others are standalone structures.

Construction on various walls started as early as the 7th century BC, and Shi Huang Ti joined selected stretches during his reign (221 to 210 BC).

Very little of his wall actually remains today.

The best-known sections of the wall, meaning the most photographed parts, were actually built during the Ming Dynasty (AD1368 to 1644).
