1MDB-sponsored Haj pilgrims to pay back money? It's fake news, says Latheefa

PETALING JAYA: A tweet purportedly by Latheefa Koya saying that those sponsored to perform the Haj pilgrimage by 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) from 2011 to 2018 would have to pay back the money is fake.

The newly-appointed Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner took to Twitter to upload a screenshot of the picture, which has been circulated on social media platforms.

"This is fake!" she posted on Sunday (June 23).

The circulated screenshot claims that action would be taken against those who did not return the money within 30 days.

Former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak had previously said that 1MDB-funded pilgrims need not worry because the funds that were used to help them fulfil the fifth pillar of Islam came from a halal source.

"Because I will bear a very big sin, if it is otherwise," he had said in June 2018.

The 1MDB scandal came to light following MACC investigation into the alleged misappropriation of government funds by the company.
