A MAN in Kedah pawned jewellery worth RM15,000 he had saved for his wedding to fulfil a higher calling – opening an orphanage for 13 youths, Harian Metro reported.

Mohamad Shahfizan Mohamed Jiva, 35, set up Pertubuhan Sentuhan Kasih Al Shafi in Sungai Petani in November last year.

Better known as Abang Shah, the bachelor then became a father figure to the group, aged between 12 and 22.

Of them, five are pursuing further studies at higher education institutions and another is due to enrol at a polytechnic next month.

After spending 10 years volunteering and working as a warden at an orphanage, Mohamad Shahfizan said he decided to set up one of his own.

> Utusan Malaysia reported that some 300 oil palm smallholders in Bentong, Pahang, fear losing their harvest after a private company was allegedly granted the right to tap the plantations they have cultivated for 14 years.

They were seeking clarification on the land status and the basis for granting another party the right to harvest the crops.

Their leader M. Tamilchelvam, 65, said each of them had applied for about 1.5ha of land but had yet to receive any official reply.

He said they began clearing the land, planting oil palm and building farm roads, using their own money, at Hutan Simpan Kemasul Tambahan 2 near Felda Chemomoi in 2012.

“Behind the land we cultivate are families and school-going children. This is our livelihood and how we make ends meet,” he added.
