Yong Peng school murder: Family of accused teen to sue over social media speculation

BATU PAHAT: The family of the 16-year-old boy, who was accused of murdering Form Four student Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal, will take legal action against those who make speculative statements about the case.

Lawyer Mohd Azlan Shah Mohd Allias, who represented the accused, advised the public against speculating or making statements on social media or in the media while the court proceedings are ongoing.

“We found several individuals who have been telling tales about the incident.

“The legal proceedings are still ongoing, and the court has not handed out any decisions at present. The people should understand the country’s law and principles of innocence until proven guilty,” he told media practitioners outside the courtroom on Thursday (Oct 15).

He added that the accused’s family would lodge a police report and take legal action soon.

Earlier, the underage boy was charged with the murder of Irene Sofiya, 16, in the hall of SMK Dato’ Seth, Yong Peng, here, between 2.30pm and 4pm on Oct 3.

Meanwhile, Johor police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad, in a statement, said the accused was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, read with Section 97 of the Child Act 2001, as he was still a child when he allegedly committed the act.

The charge carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years, and not fewer than 12 strokes of the rotan if the death sentence is not imposed.
