LOCAL writer M. Karunakaran’s poetry book has won the Tan Sri Manickavasagam Book Prize, Makkal Osai reported.

Titled Ullangai Kadavulum Ajantha Perazhagiyum (The God in the Human Palm and the Ajantha Beauty), the book was recognised for the award by the Malaysia Tamil Writers Association and the Tan Sri Manickavasagam Association.

Event organiser P. Rajendran said the recognition was intended to encourage Malaysian writers and literary talents.

A total of 16 works published in the past five years were nominated for the award this year.

The top prize went to Karuakaran, which earned him RM7, 000.

The prize is named in honour of the late Tan Sri V. Manickavasagam, who was the sixth president of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) and a former minister.

The prize aims to celebrate Tamil literature and writers in Malaysia.
