Sarawak’s free tertiary education open to UEC holders, DUN told

State Deputy Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee addressing the Sarawak Legislative Assembly during question time on Tuesday (Oct 13).

KUCHING: Sarawakian Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) holders are eligible for the state's free tertiary education scheme (FTES) at any of the four state-owned universities, says Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.

"Our free tertiary education is also open for UEC holders," the state Deputy Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister told See Chee How (IND-Batu Lintang) during Question Time in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Tuesday (Oct 13).

Dr Annuar said 192 UEC holders had been offered FTES as of June 30 this year, comprising 137 at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, 21 at Curtin University Malaysia, 33 at University of Technology Sarawak and one at i-CATS University College.

To a supplementary question from See, Dr Annuar said a pass in Bahasa Melayu was not a compulsory requirement for UEC holders to enter the state-owned universities or qualify for FTES.

He said generally the entry criteria for UEC holders is five Bs, with additional prerequisite subjects for certain degree programmes such as Mathematics, Additional Mathematics and Science.

In addition, he said the UEC holders will automatically be offered FTES if they apply for one of the 64 courses listed under the scheme.

Dr Annuar cautioned UEC holders that they need a good command of English, as the medium of instruction at the four state-owned universities is English.
