Missing senior citizen found dead in fishing nets in Kota Belud

KOTA KINABALU: The body of a man has been found tangled in fish nets, less than a day after he was reported missing at Kg Rajunah, Kota Belud district.

The 70-year-old’s body was found not far from where he was believed to have been last sighted, at around 7.30am on Tuesday (Oct 13).

According to the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department secretariat, the man was suspected to have fallen into the river and got caught in the nets.

Kota Belud Fire Station chief Elge Bakuk said they received a call to search for the missing person at around 10.54pm on Monday.

“A water surface search was conducted due to limited visibility, we had to put the search on hold and continue the next morning,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

He said when they resumed the operation, villagers informed them that the body had been found.

Elge said the body was retrieved, pronounced dead by medical officials on site and then handed over to the police for further action.

Operations on site were wrapped up at 8.45am, he said.
