Green turtle carcass found at Kerteh beach

CHUKAI: The carcass of a green turtle was found washed ashore at Pantai Chakar Hutan in Kerteh near here on Monday (Oct 12).

Wan Zuriana Wan Sulaiman, the Turtle Conservation Project manager under the Malaysian Marine Conservation and Research Society (Pulihara), said the female green turtle, believed to be around 20 years old, was discovered by Pulihara rangers and marine officers at the beach at 6.30pm.

She said the cause of death had yet to be determined, and the carcass was buried following an inspection and documentation process.

"Based on its tag, the green turtle was recorded landing and laying eggs twice at Pantai Chakar Hutan last August.

"From both landings, it produced 152 eggs," she said when contacted on Tuesday (Oct 13), adding that the incident had been reported to the Terengganu Fisheries Department. — Bernama
