Landslides, flash floods hit Kundasang villages after heavy downpour

KOTA KINABALU: Continuous heavy rainfall on Sunday (Oct 11) evening triggered landslides and flash floods across several areas in the foothills of Mount Kinabalu in Kundasang.

Ranau district police chief Supt Mursalin Mahmud, on Monday (Oct 12), said police received reports of landslides and flooding affecting Kampung Sinisian at around 6.00pm on Sunday.

"Police found that a landslide covering an estimated 223 square metres had occurred, washing the vehicle down the slope," Supt Mursalin said, adding that heavy downpours had lashed the region since 4.00pm.

"No casualties were reported in the incident," he confirmed.

Supt Mursalin added that a second landslide occurred around the same time, covering approximately 74 square metres behind a surau in Kampung Dumpiring Bawah.

Meanwhile, a blocked culvert triggered rockslides along the main road connecting Kampung Pahu and Kampung Himbaan in nearby Bundu Tuhan.

Clearing operations are ongoing in all affected locations, with police and emergency response personnel actively monitoring the situation.
