IPOH: An announcement on whether schools in Perak will be closed on Monday (Oct 12) due to haze will be made on Sunday (Oct 11), says Datuk Khairudin Abu Hanipah.
The state education committee chairman said an announcement would be made between 2pm and 3pm onwards after taking into consideration the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading.
“If there are still districts that record unhealthy API readings, schools in those areas will remain closed.
“The safety and health of pupils are our priority," he told reporters at the Perak state-level National Sports Day 2026 celebration at the State Youth and Sports Complex here on Saturday (Oct 10).
"Teaching and learning sessions will then continue as usual through home-based learning (PdPR).
"The Education Department has already made the necessary arrangements for its implementation," he added.
Schools and educational institutions in Kinta Utara, Kinta Selatan and Kuala Kangsar were ordered to close due to the haze on Friday (Oct 9).
On the celebration, Khairudin said that about 3,000 to 5,000 people were present despite the hazy weather.
"The response from the people of Perak to the state-level National Sports Day celebrations has been encouraging.
“This is one way to raise public awareness of the importance of recreation and sports in ensuring that we remain fit and healthy, enabling us to carry out our duties and responsibilities effectively," he said.
“Although the weather has not been favourable, the response from the people of Perak has been good and this morning’s celebrations have been running smoothly and lively,” he said.
