Thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast for six states until 5pm


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across six states, effective until 5pm on Friday (Oct 9).

In Peninsular Malaysia, the afternoon weather alert covers the entire state of Perlis. In Kedah, storms are expected in Sik, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu, while Perak is affected in Kerian, Selama, Larut Matang, Manjung, Perak Tengah, Bagan Datuk and Hilir Perak.

On the east coast, severe weather is forecast for Setiu, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Nerus, Kuala Terengganu, Marang, Dungun and Kemaman in Terengganu, as well as Raub, Temerloh, Jerantut and Kuantan in Pahang. In Selangor, the warning covers Kuala Selangor, Klang, Kuala Langat, Sabak Bernam and Sepang.

Over in East Malaysia, severe weather is forecast across several divisions in Sarawak, including Bintulu; Dalat and Mukah in Mukah; Lubok Antu in Sri Aman; Subis in Miri; Selangau and Kanowit in Sibu; and Kapit and Song in Kapit.

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.

The notice was officially issued by the department at 2.10pm on Friday.
