A SUSPECT in a theft case has been apprehended after nearly 40 years on the run in India, Malaysia Nanban reported.

The man who was identified as Ramprakash was arrested and charged by the Uttar Pradesh police in 1986 in relation to a theft case and an attempted murder case in Kanpur.

After jumping bail, the suspect fled to Bareli, roughly 200km away, rather than attending his court hearing.

Fearing discovery, he posed as a monk and established an ashram, successfully evading capture for nearly four decades.

His four decades as an ascetic ended after Uttar Pradesh police flagged his social media profile and launched a sting operation to arrest him.
