‘Meeting focused solely on refugees’

KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s meeting with President Min Aung Hlaing does not represent any acknowledgement for Myanmar’s governance, said Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.

“The meeting between both parties in Kuala Lumpur today (yesterday) is not a form of acknowledgement.

“I mention this as there are some who are saying that Malaysia acknowledges the government in Myanmar, but we won’t be doing so as long as the Asean five-point census is not fulfilled,” he said at the opening of the National Information Dissemination Centre here yesterday.

Fahmi said he was just trying to make Malaysia’s stand on the matter clear.

Earlier in his speech, he said the meeting was to discuss the Myanmar refugee problem in Malaysia and to find solutions.

He hoped it would bear the desired results in ensuring Myanmar refugees in Malaysia would be sent back properly.

He said another meeting was expected to discuss the Palestinian issue after the tabling of Budget 2027, with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi set to visit Malaysia today and tomorrow.
