PETALING JAYA: Images and videos of raging fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia, have continued to circulate online, with netizens pleading for rain to come and extinguish the flames.
Many prayed for rain to arrive soon to put out the fires, which have been described as a national disaster.
Videos showing red flames and thick smoke billowing into the air have also emerged, while other images show an orange sky shrouded in smoke and the aftermath of the fires, with vast areas reduced to ash.
The devastating scenes have prompted users to post prayers seeking forgiveness, while others have called for rain to bring relief.
One such video, posted by ind_story.id on Instagram, has drawn more than 3,500 comments.
User @lutvipuspita asked "Gejalanya apa ya kok bisa kebakaran luas?? Apa karna musim kemarau??" (what is the cause of the widespread fire? Is it because of the dry season?) to which @irfankubar123 responded "dibakar, bukan kebakaran" (it didn't catch fire but was set ablaze).
@_justinbi3b3rr asked "Bagaimana nasib hewan yang ada di hutan itu?" (what is the fate of the wildlife in the affected forest?) with a tearful emoji.
@theresia.isa.33 wrote: "Pray for Kalimantan" followed by five sobbing emojis and a plea to God to send His mercy and extinguish the fires.
Others questioned the motive for setting the fires, while some tagged Indonesian leaders including President Prabowo Subianto.
Some posted unflattering memes of politicians having their eyes held open as if to gaze upon the destruction, while others posted images of coins and currency to indicate financial gain as the driving force.
@a.g.u.s.pri.wid was more direct: "Semoga pelaku pembakaran mendapatkan Azab pedih dari ALLAH dan menjadi sehina-hinanya manusia di Dunia dan Akhirat." (May the perpetrator of the arson receive a painful punishment from ALLAH and be despised in this world and the hereafter.)
Meanwhile, images of forest fires and thick haze in Kalimantan have also gone viral on social media, alongside pictures of students protesting against West Kalimantan Governor Ria Norsan.
