KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's successful hosting of the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2026 demonstrates how unity and close cooperation among its multiracial population remain key strengths in achieving excellence on the international stage, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the smooth running of the prestigious sporting event reflected the dedication of thousands of volunteers, civil servants and F1 personnel who worked hand in hand to ensure its success.
"I would like to express my deepest appreciation to everyone who played a role in ensuring that the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2026 in Malaysia ran smoothly and successfully. In addition to F1 personnel, the event was made possible by thousands of volunteers and civil servants.
"This shows that when we work together in a spirit of 'segulai sejalai' (unity), Malaysia can achieve success on the international stage," he said before tabling Budget 2027 in the Dewan Rakyat Friday (Oct 9).
The 2026 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, held from Oct 2 to 4, marked F1's return to Sepang after a nine-year absence. The last race at the circuit was held in 2017.
Meanwhile, Anwar said the same spirit of unity was evident in Malaysia's performance at the 20th Asian Games, where the national contingent matched its best-ever medal haul, with athletes from various ethnic backgrounds contributing to the achievement.
"The same applies to the 20th Asian Games, where we matched our best-ever achievement. The medal winners came from various ethnic backgrounds, showing that we achieve the best when we draw on the strengths of every community," he said.
Malaysia ended its campaign at the 20th Asian Games with nine gold, seven silver and 16 bronze medals. The gold medals came from squash, karate, e-sports, sepak takraw and track cycling. - Bernama
