Three siblings killed after motorcycle crashes with lorry in Pontian

PONTIAN: A trip to school on a motorcycle turned fatal for three siblings when they were killed in an accident with a lorry on Thursday (Oct 8).

Pontian OCPD Supt Hadzrat Hussien Mion Hussain said the incident took place at Jalan Kampung Parit Haji Siraj, Kayu Ara Pasong at 7.20am near here.

He said the motorcycle was ridden by an 18-year-old male local teenager, a part-time eatery worker with two pillion riders – an eight-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl.

Supt Hadzrat Hussien said the trio – was heading towards Jalan Kayu Ara Pasong from Jalan Parit Haji Omar, near here.

“Upon arrival at the scene of the incident, the motorcycle is believed to have crashed into a lorry travelling in the opposite direction," Supt Hadzrat Hussien said in a statement.

He said the motorcyclist suffered severe injuries and was confirmed dead on the way to the Pontian Hospital, while the two pillion riders also experienced serious injuries.

Supt Hadzrat Hussien said both victims were declared dead at the scene, adding the 69-year-old male lorry driver, a local, has received treatment for arms and legs injuries.

“Preliminary investigation on the site showed the motorcycle had hit the front part of the lorry, but we are conducting further investigation to determine the cause of the incident," he said.

Supt Hadzrat Hussien said both vehicles have been seized for further investigation and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He called upon witnesses or those with information on the case to contact investigating officer Insp S. Roshini at 016-2553983.

It is unclear why the siblings were headed to school as all schools in Johor are closed for two days – from Thursday (Oct 8) to Friday (Oct 9), due to deteriorating haze conditions in the state.
