Cop killed as police vehicle veers off road in Kinabatangan


KINABATANGAN: A 29-year-old policeman has been killed after a police vehicle veered off the road while avoiding an oncoming vehicle at Kampung Lot M here.

Kinabatangan OCPD Supt Janeve Sindih said the deceased, Constable Mathew Zulian Backly, was returning to the district police headquarters from Sibuga Prison in Sandakan after escorting detainees on Thursday (Oct 8).

"When they reached Kampung Lot M, Kinabatangan, the police vehicle he was travelling in was involved in an accident," he said in a statement.

Mathew was travelling with Sergeant Jamdin Gidah and Constable Soperday Muhammad, who was driving the vehicle.

All three were taken by ambulance to the emergency department of Kinabatangan Hospital, where a medical officer confirmed Mathew's death at 4.53pm.

His remains will be brought back to Kuching, Sarawak.
