KUALA LUMPUR: Immigration authorities will soon have real-time access to information from other government agencies to better screen travellers entering and leaving Malaysia, says the Home Ministry.
It said this capability will come under new enhancements to the National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe) and facilitate real-time data sharing with agencies such as Interpol, police, the Prisons Department and Inland Revenue Board (LHDN).
Having begun its phased rollout on March 31, NIISe is expected to have replaced the existing Malaysian Immigration System (myIMMs) entirely by the end of last month, utilising more modern technology and infrastructure to strengthen immigration controls.
“The NIISe system will also be improved in terms of early screening, traveller risk assessment profiling, as well as integration and real-time data sharing between various agencies.
“Data sharing will also include agencies like the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) and Transport Ministry,” it said in a parliamentary written reply dated Tuesday (Oct 7).
Beyond NIISe, the ministry also said the government is working on a longer-term plan to develop the National Border Control System (SKSN).
It said this system will incorporate the latest surveillance systems based on artificial intelligence (AI) technology and data analytics.
“This will enable operations to be carried out without supervision as well as allow for the rapid dissemination of information in real time.
“The system will also enable round-the-clock continuous surveillance to protect Malaysia's land and maritime borders for peace, stability and national sovereignty,” the Ministry said, adding that details of the proposed system were still being refined.
The ministry was responding to a written parliamentary question from Rushdan Rusmi (PN-Padang Besar) on whether the government had a real-time data-sharing system integrating immigration information, cross-border crime, smuggling, geospatial information, risky movements and intelligence among security and border enforcement agencies.
