KUALA LUMPUR: Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in areas recording Air Pollutant Index (API) readings above 201 are given the autonomy to determine the appropriate mode of teaching and learning.
In a statement on Wednesday (Oct 7), the Higher Education Ministry said it was closely monitoring developments in air quality and had directed all HEIs under its purview to monitor API readings in their respective localities.
“Outdoor activities should also be assessed and adjusted based on the latest API readings.
“Members of HEIs are reminded to refer to official information from the Environment Department and comply with the guidelines issued by their respective institutions,” it said.
The ministry also said that it would continue to monitor the situation and adjust the operational approach of HEIs accordingly to safeguard the health, well-being and welfare of the higher education community.
A total of 36 areas recorded unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings as of 10am on Wednesday (Oct 7), with Johan Setia in Selangor recording the highest reading at 191.
API readings of 0 to 50 indicate good air quality, 51 to 100 moderate, 101 to 200 unhealthy, 201 to 300 very unhealthy, and readings exceeding 300 are hazardous.
