Thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast for six states until 4pm


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across six states, effective until 4pm on Tuesday (Oct 6).

In the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia, the afternoon weather alert covers the entire state of Perlis and Penang. In Kedah, storms are expected in Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Yan, Kota Setar and Kuala Muda, while Kerian is affected in Perak.

Over in East Malaysia, severe weather is forecast across several divisions in Sarawak, including Matu, Dalat and Mukah in Mukah; Tatau and Bintulu in Bintulu; Subis, Miri and Marudi in Miri; Lundu in Kuching; and Limbang in Limbang.

In Sabah, the alert spans Pedalaman (Tambunan, Membakut, Keningau and Beaufort), Pantai Barat (Ranau, Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Papar and Kota Belud), Tawau (Kalabakan, Tawau and Lahad Datu), and Kota Marudu in Kudat.

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.

The notice was officially issued by the department at 1pm on Tuesday.
