Cross-border haze expected to clear from Oct 9 as inter-monsoon period begins

PETALING JAYA: The cross-border haze situation is expected to ease from Friday (Oct 9) following heavy rain and a change in wind direction as the country enters the inter-monsoon period.

Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the inter-monsoon period is expected to begin on Oct 9 and continue until the end of October.

He said the start of the period would mark the end of the Southwest Monsoon, which began on May 14.

“During the inter-monsoon period, the country will experience weak winds from various directions, resulting in heavy rain and thunderstorms.

“This could encourage the formation of thunderstorms, which typically bring heavy rain and strong winds over a short period.

“This is likely to occur particularly in the afternoons and early evenings in most areas of the western and interior parts of the peninsula, as well as western Sabah and Sarawak,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (Oct 6).

However, Mohd Hisham said the weather conditions could also result in flash floods, water surges, fallen trees and damage to weak structures.

“The public is advised to remain vigilant during this period and stay updated on weather forecasts and warnings issued by MetMalaysia.

“They can check the department’s official website, the myCuaca mobile app and its official social media platforms, or contact the department’s hotline at 1-300-22-1638 for further inquiries,” he said.
