Civil servant remanded in Sabah over RM2mil corruption probe

KOTA KINABALU: A civil servant in his 40s has been remanded for six days over suspected abuse of power involving 15 government projects worth RM2mil in Sabah.

The suspect was detained until Oct 12 following a remand order issued in connection with an investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on Tuesday (Oct 6).

He was arrested at around 4pm on Monday (Oct 5) after giving his statement at the Keningau MACC office.

According to sources, the suspect allegedly abused his position between 2021 and 2024 by signing off on completion certificates for projects awarded to a company owned by a family member.

Sabah MACC Director Datuk Mohd Fuad Bee Basrah confirmed the arrest, stating that the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.

The section penalises any public officer who uses their office or position to secure gratification for themselves, a relative, or an associate.
