PM congratulates Harimau Malaya on third place effort, but says 'no special holiday'

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim congratulated Harimau Malaya on their success in defeating Vietnam, thereby securing third place in the FIFA Asean Cup 2026.

The Prime Minister said the success also witnessed the national squad ending their campaign in the tournament undefeated and without conceding a single goal.

"Thank you to all the players and the coaching staff for their dedication and fighting spirit for the badge on the chest," he said via a Facebook post Monday (Oct 5).

The Prime Minister also offered words of encouragement to the national squad to keep moving forward and fighting to bring glory to the country.

Anwar also said in the same post that no public holiday would be granted following the success.

"No public holiday, yes, including for expatriates working in Malaysia. Tomorrow is work as usual," he said.

Earlier, Malaysia ended a 12-year wait to defeat Vietnam after recording a 1-0 victory in the FIFA Asean Cup 2026 third-place playoff at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (GBK) in Jakarta Monday.

Second half substitute Fergus Tierney emerged as the hero for Harimau Malaya by scoring the only goal of the match in the 62nd minute, thus ensuring the squad managed by interim head coach Tan Cheng Hoe finished their campaign in third place. - Bernama
