Likas rep urges school safety audit following student tragedy

KOTA KINABALU: A nationwide safety audit of schools and hostels must be conducted following the death of Form Four student Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal, says Likas assemblyman Tham Yun Fook.

Tham also questioned why high-risk areas were left unmonitored and whether current safety protocols are adequate.

Reports revealed that the location where Irene was found dead lacked CCTV coverage.

"Every time a tragedy occurs, the public hears promises that investigations will be carried out and procedures strengthened. Yet tragedies continue to occur,” said the Parti Warisan lawmaker in a statement on Monday (Oct 5).

Tham called on the Education Ministry to review security infrastructure, increase transparency, and ensure accountability for negligence.

To address recurring cases of bullying, abuse, and violence, he proposed establishing bipartisan committees on student safety at the school, district, and state levels involving education officials, parents, elected representatives, and civil society groups.
