e-Konsular registration stays voluntary for overseas travellers, says Tok Mat

KUALA LUMPUR: No plans to make registering in the e-Konsular system mandatory for Malaysians travelling abroad, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

“Malaysians are encouraged to make use of the e-Konsular system when going overseas, regardless of the reason, as it will make it easier for us to contact them in case anything occurs.

“They are also advised to download the MyWorld Alert application which allows Malaysians to be alerted of any safety concerns in the country they are visiting as well as contact the Malaysian Embassy easily,” said the Foreign Minister during Question Time at the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Oct 5).

This comes following a number of natural disasters around the world that affected Malaysians, including the devastating floods in Nepal on Aug 26.

“Last week, our Embassy's Chargé d'Affaires (CDA) met with Nepal's Home Ministry, which has assured us they are working on law amendments for the quick release of death certificates for the missing Malaysians.

“This is vital so the next-of-kin of those missing can resolve any banking, registration and other issues related to their missing loved ones,” Mohamad Hasan added.

He was responding to a supplementary question from Khairil Nizam Khirudin (PN-Jerantut) regarding the government’s stance on making e-Konsular system registration mandatory and an update on the Nepal flood situation.
