KUALA LUMPUR: Two participants in the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon 2026 were injured after being hit by a motorcyclist suspected of riding while intoxicated.
At about 6.15am yesterday, the 21-year-old motorcyclist and his 19-year-old pillion rider entered a road section closed with traffic cones before a police officer ordered them to stop.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the motorcyclist rode against the flow of traffic along Jalan Munshi Abdullah before crashing into the two runners.
“One of the victims, a 50-year-old woman, suffered neck injuries and is receiving treatment at Prince Court Medical Centre.
“The other victim, a 41-year-old man, sustained injuries to his right knee and hand,” he said.
ACP Mohd Zamzuri said an initial alcohol screening on the rider returned a positive result, with an EBA reading of 164mg/100ml.
The rider and pillion passenger were then sent for blood and urine tests.
The rider has been remanded for three days until Oct 5, while the pillion passenger until Oct 4.
Investigations are being conducted under Section 44(1A)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Section 186 of the Penal Code.
The incident went viral on social media, with a video showing one of the runners lying on the road following the collision.
It also shows police detaining the rider and pillion passenger, while tensions appeared to rise as several other marathon participants expressed anger over the incident.
Those with information have been urged to contact the Tun HS Lee traffic police at 03-2071 9999 or any police station.
