KOTA KINABALU: Warisan vice-president Datuk Junz Wong has been elected the party's Putatan chief post in a straight fight.
Wong, who is also Tanjung Aru assemblyman, secured 118 votes to beat Juriah Uda by a comfortable 72-vote majority.
Juriah is the daughter of former division chief Datuk Uda Sulai, 85, who retired from politics.
Wong, who was previously Kota Kinabalu Waisan chief, moved to Putatan, which parliamentary constituency includes his Tanjung Aru state seat.
On being announced the winner on Sunday (Oct 4), Wong thanked Udah for his contribution for the party especially as had defeated Sabah Barisan Nasional strongman Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin to win the Petagas seat in the 2018 Sabah Election.
Wong told party members that with division elections, they should close ranks and focus on preparing the party for the upcoming general election.
He said they should work on strategies to win the Putatan parliamentary seat, which has about 30,000 Muslim bumiputra and a mix of 20,000 Kadazandusun and Chinese voters.
The Putatan seat is held Barisan's Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, the former state deputy chief minister.
Wong also endorsed for his rival Juliah as the Putatan division's choice to contest to be a party central committee member during Warisan's annual general meeting scheduled for Oct 24 in Sandakan.
