Cockfighting gambling syndicate busted with 41 nabbed in Batu Gajah

IPOH: Police have crippled a cockfighting gambling syndicate with the arrest of 41 men during a raid at a hut in a durian orchard in Papan, Batu Gajah.

The raid was conducted at about 7pm on Oct 3 by the Perak police Criminal Investigation Department’s D7 division, with assistance from its D9 division, Batu Gajah district police and the Perak Veterinary Services Department.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said those arrested comprised 40 local men and an Indonesian national.

“Among them was a 50-year-old local man who claimed to be the organiser and owner of the premises, while two others were believed to have acted as referees and assistants to the organiser.

“Police also seized several items and RM114,211 in cash believed to be linked to the illegal activity.

“Investigations revealed that the gambling operation had been running since early this year, with bets reaching up to RM20,000 per round,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Oct 4).

Comm Alwi said the case is being investigated under Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, Section 32 of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

“Firm action would continue to be taken without compromise against individuals or groups involved in illegal gambling and animal cruelty,” he added.
