JOHOR BARU: The deteriorating air quality levels in certain parts of the state have prompted the Johor government to take proactive measures, including formally raising concerns over the transboundary haze with Indonesian authorities.
It is learnt that Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi sent a letter to the Indonesian Consulate General’s office in Johor Baru on Sept 30 expressing concern over the deteriorating air quality levels as the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in certain areas have reached unhealthy levels.
The haze has been affecting the state, especially Johor Baru over the past few weeks and despite regular heavy downpours, visibility remains bad.
It is learnt that in the letter, the Johor government expressed its concerns that the prolonged haze is said to have directly affected the health and well-being of Johoreans, particularly children, the elderly and vulnerable groups, as well as disrupting school activities, outdoor activities and the public’s daily routines.
It also called for immediate and firm action to address the causes of transboundary haze, including strengthening prevention, monitoring and enforcement to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
In the same letter, the state government expressed hope that the matter would be given due attention and conveyed its appreciation for the cooperation of all parties in addressing the issue.
At press time, efforts were underway to get comments about the letter from the Indonesian Consulate General in Johor Baru.
