PETALING JAYA: Malaysia may have thrashed Singapore 6-0, but the emphatic win at the Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung on Thursday (Oct 1) was not enough to earn them a place in the FIFA Asean Cup final.
Bergson Da Silva got Malaysia off to a flying start, converting from the spot in the eighth minute after Fergus Tierney was brought down inside the box.
Stuart Wilkin then made it 2-0 in the 26th minute, finishing off Manuel Hidalgo's pass as Malaysia took a firm grip on the match.
Malaysia kept their foot on the pedal after the break, with Da Silva grabbing his second in the 62nd minute before Paulo Josue added another in the 76th.
Substitute Syahir Bashah joined the scoring in the 87th minute, before Bergson completed his hattrick in stoppage time to round off the 6-0 win.
Despite the six-goal haul, Malaysia were left disappointed as they missed out on the final on goal difference.
Indonesia, who had earlier thrashed Bangladesh 9-2 at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, finished level with Malaysia on four points in Group A but edged them on goal difference to take top spot.
Indonesia will take on Group B champions Thailand in the final on Oct 5, while Malaysia will face Vietnam in the bronze medal playoff.
