Four nabbed, RM4.4mil drugs seized in three Penang operations

GEORGE TOWN: Police arrested four suspects and seized drugs worth approximately RM4.4mil in three separate operations across Penang between Sept 21 and 27.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Dennis Lim Kwang Keng said the first case involved a 47-year-old local man arrested near Jalan Masjid Negeri at about 3.30pm on Sept 21.

"The suspect was seen carrying a package to a vehicle parked at a premise suspected to be used for storing drugs and drug-processing equipment," Comm Lim said during a press conference at the Penang police contingent headquarters on Thursday (Oct 1).

"Police seized 8.83kg of heroin and 5.35kg of crystal methamphetamine, worth an estimated RM443,518," he added.

The suspect was remanded for 14 days from Sept 22 to Oct 5 to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

In the second case, Comm Lim said a local man and his foreign female partner, aged between 27 and 42, were arrested in Sungai Nibong at about 8.50pm on Sept 22 over alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

"Two raids conducted around Jalan Tun Dr Awang and Sungai Nibong Kecil resulted in the seizure of 3.26kg of MDMA powder and five litres of liquid MDMA, worth an estimated RM2.2mil," he said.

The couple were remanded for 14 days from Sept 23 to Oct 6 under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

In the third case, a 45-year-old local man was detained near Jalan Seladang, Bukit Mertajam, at about 11.30pm on Sept 27.

Comm Lim said officers seized 11.8kg of MDMA powder, 182 ecstasy and Erimin 5 pills, and 70g of ketamine, with an estimated value of RM1.8mil.

The suspect was remanded for seven days from Sept 27 to Oct 3 under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Comm Lim noted that initial investigations indicated all four suspects had been active in drug trafficking around Penang since July.

"Urine screening found all four suspects negative for drugs, while checks revealed one suspect had a prior criminal and narcotics record," he said.

Police also seized six vehicles valued at RM58,000 under the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988.
