Penang supermart awning collapses after downpour, strong winds

KEPALA BATAS: The awning of a supermarket here collapsed following heavy rain and strong winds on Wednesday (Sept 30).

Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director John Sagun Francis said the structure fell on three motorcycles parked below.

"The motorcycle owners were not at the scene when the incident occurred," he said in a statement.

John said the operations commander conducted a size-up and instructed the response team to cordon off the affected area and prevent the public from entering.

He said after the team ensured that the site was safe and there were no further hazards, it allowed the supermarket management to take over the scene for further action.

A total of nine officers and personnel from the Kepala Batas fire station were sent to the scene at 1.50pm.

No injuries were reported during the incident and the operation ended at 2.48pm, John added.
