MELAKA: Mutual respect and wisdom in managing differences must form the foundation of national unity, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic).
The Deputy Prime Minister said social harmony depended on the willingness of all parties to understand the country’s history and foundations while respecting the rights of every citizen.
"The Federal Constitution provides the foundation for ensuring that the position and rights of every citizen are understood and protected,” he said when opening the national discourse, Unravelling the Malay Peninsula Polemic, at the Melaka International Trade Centre in Ayer Keroh here on Saturday (Sept 26).
Ahmad Zahid said differences of opinion, including in politics, must be managed maturely to preserve the country’s harmony and stability.
“Differences must not prevent us from reaching a consensus on matters concerning religion, race and the nation,” he said.
He said efforts to unite the Malay-Muslim community must continue despite differences in political affiliation.
“Such consensus must be anchored in the Federal Constitution and respect the rights of all citizens,” he said.
Ahmad Zahid also cautioned that political differences should not erode respect for the royal institution.
He said political convictions should guide the people in understanding the monarchy, customs and state constitutions.
"The position and responsibilities of each institution must be properly understood before any dispute arises,” he said.
He added that respect for the Constitution must be upheld even when a decision did not meet the expectations of certain parties.
Ahmad Zahid said political leaders had a responsibility to pass these principles and values on to future generations.
“The primary duty of leaders is to resolve confusion through knowledge and wisdom while safeguarding the dignity of our institutions, not to lash out without decorum or civility,” he said.
He said Umno remained steadfast in upholding the royal institution and the Federal Constitution without compromise.
“This includes the pardoning powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers, as provided for under the Constitution,” he added.
