KUALA LUMPUR: A former 15th General Election (GE15) candidate has been detained for allegedly pushing a 79-year-old woman into a drain in OUG, Old Klang Road.
Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Hoo Chang Hook said police received a report about the incident at 12.37pm on the same day of the incident on Sept 18.
He said initial investigations found that the victim, a former Selangor hockey player in the 1960s, had gone to a shop and was allegedly followed by the suspect.
“At about 10.30am, when the victim left the shop, the female suspect, who was outside the premises, allegedly pushed her, causing her to fall into a drain.
“The victim suffered injuries to the back of her head, left hand and back. She was taken to Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) for treatment,” he said in a statement.
ACP Hoo said CCTV footage obtained by police showed the suspect outside the shop before the alleged incident.
“The suspect is a 59-year-old retiree and she had contested as an Independent candidate in GE15.
“The suspect was arrested by investigating officers from the Brickfields district police headquarters in OUG. We also seized clothing believed to have been worn during the incident,” he said.
He said the suspect denied pushing the victim when questioned and did not cooperate with police over the alleged motive.
“The suspect was remanded for one day, and the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court ordered the defence to arrange for the suspect to undergo psychiatric treatment,” he said.
ACP Hoo added that the victim was warded in the emergency department for four days before being discharged on Sept 21.
“We are still awaiting the full report from University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) medical specialists, including the doctor’s statement, before the investigation papers are referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further instructions.
“The case is being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code,” he said.
