TANJUNG MALIM: TVET graduates need more than technical skills to succeed in a rapidly changing world, with artificial intelligence (AI), innovation and entrepreneurship becoming increasingly important, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic).
The Deputy Prime Minister said strengthening industry-linked innovation, embracing entrepreneurship as well as mastering AI, data and digital technology were crucial to advancing graduates’ skills and helping them build careers and businesses.
“The mastery of AI, data and digital technology must become a core competency among graduates, complemented by problem-solving, communication and ethical decision-making skills.
“We want graduates to know how to use technology effectively while remaining courteous and responsible,” he said at the Central Zone Polytechnics and Community Colleges (PolyCC) convocation ceremony at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris here yesterday.
Ahmad Zahid said the second area was strengthening applied innovation through closer collaboration between PolyCC and industry.
He said promising student projects should be tested in real-world conditions, improved and eventually brought to market.
“For example, a smart irrigation system developed by students could be tested with farmers to reduce water wastage and make their work easier.
“Institutions and industry should provide the necessary guidance and pathways for such innovations to be commercialised,” he said.
On entrepreneurship, Ahmad Zahid said more opportunities should be created for Technical and Vocational Education and Training graduates to venture into business.
He cited Ampang Community College graduate Noor Azree Aiman, who founded ASZR Legacy, a mobile phone repair business.
“With technical skills and entrepreneurial guidance, Noor Azree expanded the business by opening two more branches and creating employment opportunities for local youths,” he said.
He also challenged PolyCC, industry players and graduates not merely to prepare for change but to develop and lead.
