KOTA KINABALU: A Sabah consumer group is urging the state government to consider electricity bill relief to ease financial pressures on households and businesses during the ongoing hot season.
Sabah Malaysia National Consumers’ Foundation chairman David Chan said the chapter has received numerous complaints regarding surging electricity bills over recent months.
"At a time when families and businesses are carefully managing expenses, rising electricity costs are a serious concern," Chan said on Wednesday (Sept 23). "Electricity is not just a household necessity; it is a fundamental operating cost across almost every sector."
Chan warned that higher utility costs for shops, hotels, and manufacturers could drive up general consumer prices. He called on authorities to transparently explain the recent tariff adjustments and detail mitigation steps.
Highlighting Sarawak’s 25% electricity discount for domestic users running from April to December 2026, Chan questioned whether Sabah could implement similar support.
He suggested targeted rebates for vulnerable households, assistance for small businesses, and temporary relief measures.
"We are not asking the government to compromise the long-term sustainability of Sabah's power supply," Chan clarified. "However, the solution should strike a fair balance between strengthening the energy sector and protecting consumers from excessive financial strain."
