BATU GAJAH: An earlier accident that left a car in the middle of the road and poor lighting conditions may have led to the fatal accident involving 12 motorcycles on the Ipoh North–Ipoh South Local Express Lane between Meru and Bercham in Ipoh.
Perak deputy police chief Deputy Comm Mohammad Azlin Sadari said the motorcyclists were also believed to have traveled closely together and could not stop in time prior to hitting the car.
"Given that the lighting may not have been bright enough, the group of youths riding motorcycles collided with the cars that were already there.
“They were travelling in a large group and close together," he told reporters after attending a town hall session at Dewan Bandaran Kinta here on Saturday (Sept 19).
"When one motorcycle collided, the others also crashed into it, resulting in a chain collision,” he added.
It was reported that three motorcyclists were killed following the accident on Saturday (Sept 19) at about 3.35am.
Two of the victims, aged 19 and 20, died on the spot, while another 19-year-old died while being treated at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital.
There were also nine other motorcyclists, aged between 19 and 35, who suffered various injuries while three car drivers were unhurt.
When asked if the victims were involved in illegal racing, DCP Mohammad Azlin said police had yet to confirm this as statements had not been taken from those still receiving treatment.
“Once they have recovered and their condition allows us to take their statements, we can unfold what actually happened,” he said.
