PETALING JAYA: DAP says Hannah Yeoh’s position as a member of the Pardons Board was consistent with the party’s core principles, while respecting the royal pardon granted to Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Its secretary-general Anthony Loke said the party would hold a Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting on Saturday (Sept 19) to decide its stance and next course of action.
He added that DAP respected the pardon power of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as provided under the Federal Constitution and defended the rule of law and the fight against corruption.
“The conviction of Najib in the 1MDB case was an offence determined by the courts, and its impact on the country cannot be forgotten.
“The financial impact of this embezzlement continues to be borne by the nation and the people to this day. According to the Finance Ministry, the total 1MDB obligations borne by the government amount to RM51.4bil, comprising RM42.5bil already paid by the government and a remaining debt of RM8.9bil,” he said in a statement on Friday (Sept 18).
Loke added that DAP has consistently demanded justice and accountability in the 1MDB scandal from the very beginning.
“We fought to ensure this embezzlement was thoroughly investigated and that those responsible were brought through an independent and fair legal process.
“We also have not forgotten that public anger towards the 1MDB scandal was among the primary factors leading to the change of government in the 14th General Election in 2018.
“The people's trust to combat corruption and abuse of power will continue to be DAP's guiding principle," he said.
