DUNGUN: The Terengganu Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) is tracking a wild elephant believed to have been struck by a vehicle at KM160 of Jalan Jerangau-Jabor, near Jabor Estate.
Terengganu Perhilitan director Dennis Ten Choon Yung said five rangers were deployed immediately to inspect the site and track the animal.
The wild elephant is believed to have strayed from a nearby protected forest, namely the Bukit Bandi-Cerul Protected Forest.
The animal is believed to be of the Asian elephant species, while its gender has yet to be identified.
“Search and monitoring efforts will continue to locate the elephant and assess its physical condition,” Ten said, as reported by Bernama.
An inspection of the scene revealed mud tracks and regurgitated food near an SUV involved in the crash.
Ten noted that a wildlife crossing sign was located roughly 4km from the crash site.
“Drivers are strongly advised to exercise caution and obey speed limits, particularly when passing through known wildlife crossing zones,” he added.
Three people sustained minor injuries in the Monday night crash involving two cars after one vehicle collided with the pachyderm.
