THE management of a scenic area in China is offering photography enthusiasts a chance to earn 30,000 yuan (RM18,000) by spending 30 days observing the weather and scenery from a mountain summit.
Nanyang Siang Pau reported that the Tianmeng Scenic Area at Wenlv Yimeng Mountain in Shandong province is recruiting a “cloud observer” to work at an altitude of 1,001.2m.
The successful applicant’s main duties will include documenting weather conditions and autumn scenery, producing at least one short video daily and taking several high-resolution photographs.
The position comes with free accommodation and meals.
Applicants will be assessed based on their photography and content creation skills, as well as their health and physical stamina, as the successful candidate will have to live at the mountain summit for an extended period.
Applications close at 3pm on Wednesday, with the successful candidate to be announced on the scenic area’s official platform on Sept 11.
The recruitment is not the first such initiative in China.
Earlier, the Laojun Mountain scenic area in Henan province recruited a “cloud observer” for 60,000 yuan (RM36,000).

Sin Chew Daily reported that a video of the incident, filmed by another customer, sparked widespread attention online.
A woman, claiming to be the boy’s mother, later apologised on social media, admitting that she had acted inappropriately and offering to reimburse the complainant’s bill at the restaurant.
She explained that the boy’s father was paying the bill while their elder son was still eating when her younger son suddenly needed to use the toilet.
In a rush, she grabbed a disposable cup for him to use.
She said that she had not realised her actions would affect other diners and said she felt “utterly ashamed” after seeing the video.
The restaurant said staff had thoroughly cleaned and disinfected the affected area, while all items involved had been disposed of.
