KUALA LUMPUR: The decision to delay the tabling of the Senior Citizens Bill to early next year has been welcomed, with the move seen as an opportunity to ensure the proposed legislation is comprehensive and addresses the needs of all older Malaysians.
Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the Bill, which was initially expected to be tabled in October, should not be rushed given its importance to the country’s ageing population.
“The delay is necessary as it shows the Government is taking the matter seriously. We should not rush such an important piece of legislation,” he said when contacted on Saturday (Sept 5).
Lee said the Bill should only be tabled after it had been properly presented and thoroughly discussed, stressing that it would affect every older person in Malaysia.
He said the delay would also allow the government to incorporate suggestions from state governments, community groups and members of the public.
“However, the government must listen carefully to what people truly need. No one should be left out of the consultation process,” he said.
Lee said vulnerable older persons, in particular, must not be overlooked as doing so would undermine the purpose of the proposed legislation.
“Every Malaysian in their later years deserves care, respect and support, no matter who they are, where they live or how much money they have,” he said.
He said the proposed law should clearly safeguard the rights of senior citizens, including access to assistance when needed, quality healthcare, adequate financial security and opportunities to remain involved in community life.
The Bill should also cater to older persons living in remote areas and those who are often overlooked, he added.
Lee said older Malaysians deserved to spend their later years in safety, comfort and dignity, noting their contributions to the development of the country and the raising of generations of Malaysians.
“If taking more time helps make this law strong and fair, then the delay is reasonable — but only if the final Bill truly delivers for every older person in Malaysia,” he said.
