KUALA LUMPUR: The transition from the existing MyKad structure to the new-generation MyKad has hit a temporary snag, says the National Registration Department (JPN).
The department said printing issues had caused temporary disruptions to its printing services, which are expected to last until Sept 7.
In light of this, the department advised the public, who do not urgently need to replace or renew their MyKad, to postpone such transactions during this period.
Parents or guardians of first-time applicants, particularly children reaching the age of 12, are also advised to hold off on applying for now so that their children can obtain the new-generation MyKad when it becomes available.
The JPN expressed its appreciation for the public’s patience and cooperation throughout this transitional period.
“The department apologises for any inconvenience caused in connection with this matter,” it said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported.
On June 1, the new-generation MyKad, which features 53 security elements, was introduced to replace the existing MyKad in phases and is currently limited to specific categories of applicants.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has said the government has no plans to mandate a blanket replacement of existing MyKad cards, stressing that current identity cards remain valid and can continue to be used.
